There were five of us for the final session of the year so I thought Dice Town would be a fun game to try for the first time. The game was designed by Ludovic Maublanc and Bruno Cathala and was published by Matagot.
Players are trying to put together a hand of five dice in order to get the rewards offered by the six locations in Dice Town. The end goal is to collect gold nuggets, property claim cards, equipment cards and money, all of which translate into victory points. Also, being sheriff at the end of the game gives a bonus 5 VPs. I quite like the main mechanic of keeping one die rolled or paying to keep more, which makes generating some cash pretty vital. Also, the catch-up of visiting Doctor Badluck means that even if you roll rubbish, you can still get some benefit. In fact, Doctor Badluck can be better than winning certain of the rewards, particularly in a five player game.
In our game, I was probably the most frequent visitor to the Doctor and grabbed most of my nuggets that way. However, I was never winning property claim cards, which are generally more valuable, and it was really down to Mark K and Guy as to who was going to win. As it turned out, Mark K just shaded it by a single point. I quite liked this game and am keen to try it with four, as this looks like the best number to play with. |
