There were six of us this week but I was having to do some ferrying of kids around so I selected some shorter games for us to try. First up was Midnight Party and I was amazed to find that Mark K was the only other person to have played this before.
Each player controls 2 guests at a party who mill around on the landing until Hugo the ghost appears. Movement is by die roll with four sides showing moves of 1,2,4 or 5 spaces and the other two sides showing Hugo, who always moves 3 spaces. On your turn, you roll the die and move one of your guests clockwise around the landing or Hugo up the stairs and then also clockwise round the landing. Once Hugo reaches the landing, players are able to move into one of the various rooms and close the door. Guests caught by Hugo score minus points and after three rounds of this, whoever has the lowest negative score wins.
It’s amazing how Hugo tends to speed up once he reaches the landing and, in all 3 rounds, he found lots of victims. In the first round, I managed to get both of my guests to safety. Steve clearly didn’t realise that he had his tactics all wrong: rolling Hugo nearly every turn is not a good plan. In the second round, the Hugo-rolling epidemic moved onto John who, impressively, racked up 18 points for the round. He didn’t do much better in the final round and I also joined the Hugo rolling club to end my chances of winning. As it turned out, Nige ended up showing us how skilfully to evade the ghost and took the win. Good fun. |
