Next up was this unusual card game from Claudia Hely & Roman Pelek, the designers of Santiago. It is an auction and card placement game where players bid to collect valuable cards for their wine collection. However, you are using the same cards as you may also be collecting to make your bids, so your strategy is changing all the time. Added to that, you don’t always need to bid higher than the previous person, just a different amount than previous offers, to stay in the bidding. The placement rules also require you to think about how to place the cards won to best effect and, as you can only hold up to six cards in hand, you often are forced to place cards you would rather not.

We found this to be quite interesting, although Mark K seemed to get the strategies figured out a lot easier than the rest of us, especially me. He seemed to balance the cards he was able to bid with and those he was seeking to get very well. Despite Nige trying to scupper his plans, he emerged an easy winner. This is a good little game and we need to play again soon to see if we’ve got it figured out.
