This week, we started with Kreta, a new area majority game from Stefan Dorra. The different part of this game is that you only score 11 of the 26 locations and you only ever know the next 2 locations to be scored. Players use character cards to perform various actions but once used, you don’t get the card back until someone triggers a scoring with their Castellan character card.

Our early game was very concentrated on the West of the island and Mark K and Phil got well positioned early on in the valuable 5 and 6 point regions. As the locations surrounding these regions kept coming up for scoring, they got a rich payout from their investment. The East and centre of the island didn’t really develop until later in the game but Mark and Phil continued to be contenders in those regions and, when the last scoring region was revealed by me to be a good location for Mark, I immediately chose to swap it for…… an even better location for Mark! Damn! Needless to say, he quickly wrapped the game up for a good win.

I liked Kreta quite a bit. Despite it being similar to other area-majority games, it plays quickly and has enough different about it to make it stand up on its own merits.
