Ra is one of my all-time favourite games, so a card-game version was a must-buy for me. Unfortunately, when I got it back from Essen, I found one of the two decks of cards to be missing – Aaarrggh! Fortunately though, a quick e-mail to Amigo saw a replacement pack arrive through the post just three days later – well done Amigo for good customer service.

Razzia is set in the 1930s prohibition era rather than ancient Egypt but the gameplay is virtually identical to the original using cards rather than tiles. Players on their turn get to choose between drawing a card and adding it to the display; stealing a card from the display if they have a thief card; or calling an auction. As in Ra, there is a variety of different types of card, some of which go towards your score in each round and some of which only score at the end. There is no equivalent of the disaster tiles though. Police cards equate to the Ra tiles of the original and once seven police cards have been revealed, the round ends and scores are noted down on paper. The person with the highest score after three rounds wins.

This is unmistakably Ra – the card game and is a definite winner in my books. In our game, I raced out to an early lead in the first round, whereas John was stocking up on the brown (monument) cards for a big score in the final round. Mark G seemed to collect plenty of cards but they just didn’t score him very much. In the last round, as predicted, John raked in the points, but I took the bonus for highest sum on my bidding chits and gave me a one point edge for the win. Excellent game.
