After perishing on Volcano Island, we had about half an hour left so jumped into the base game of Dominion as everyone was familiar enough with it that we knew we'd get it finished pretty quickly. Andrew got off to a good start and invested heavily in action cards. Unfortunately though, although this enabled him to chain lots of cards each turn (and his turns were generally taking as long as the other three players' turns put together - not that he was playing particularly slowly), he wasn't generating enough coins to go for the big points. Mark K was heavily into Militia so, although there were some moats in play, often we were being reduced to three cards in play. I managed to get a few gold coins which helped towards grabbing a few provinces but the Militia and some Spies were keeping the really good hands at bay, so much so that the game ended when the last Estate card (yes, the lowly 1 VP Estate card) was drawn. I don't think I've seen that happen before. Nobody really knew who was ahead until the final totting up of points so we were a bit surprised to find Mark K's winning margin to be as high as it was - 7 points, with him on 42. Fine game, as always.
