My table tried out Mike Fitzgerald's Diamonds for our third game, which is whist with a twist. Each suit has a special action associated with it linked to the collection or stealing of the diamond crystals that come alongside the deck of cards. When you win a trick, you carry out the action associated with the card you played but, if you can't follow suit, you also get to carry out the suit action of the card discarded. Then at the end of a round, the person with the most cards in each suit gets to perform that suit action a further time. This was a really enjoyable variant and, although we all thought John was leading, he actually had the fewest points of all of us and Nicky emerged as the Diamond Queen. |
