The remaining three of us tried the new release from Willaim Attia (the designer of Caylus), Spyrium which is set in a Victorian Steampunk era, following the discovery of a highly efficient energy source: Spyrium. Players are industrialists trying to use their mines and factories to process this mineral to generate victory points.

The game is played over six rounds with each split into two phases, a worker placement phase followed by a worker activation phase. Throughout, you are trying to make use of various characters, construct buildings which you can then make use of each turn, and discover techniques which give you efficiency advantages during the game. There is a lot to think about in the game and money is very tight and there is quite a bit of angst in deciding when to move from the first phase to the second phase so you don't miss out on the most lucrative buildings and techniques.

We all really enjoyed the game and there looks to be plenty of variety in the way the game is set up to ensure it plays differently each time. That said, you need to get an engine of sorts going to generate the necessary victory points and Guy was best able to do that, taking a reasonably comfortable win once the bonus points from his buildings and techniques had been taken into account.
