We followed Shark with a game that was new to everyone but me. Don by Michael Schacht is an auction game with an extremely thin theme about gangsters controlling property in New York. There are 15 auctions in each of which 1,2 or 3 properties (cards) are sold off. The cards come in six different colours and the numbers 0-9 appear 3 times in the deck. The highest bidder pays the price bid, split equally to each other player, unless the last digit of the amount bid appears on a card already held by someone, in which case that person or those people take the lot. Therefore, as you acquire more cards, the greater the chance you will receive more income from future auctions. However, everyone else knows that and will seek to bid an amount where no one person benefits unduly. The other twist is that, having acquired a card, the person cannot make a bid in future equal to the number (or ending in the number) shown on the card.

So gaining cards is good, but gaining cards of the same colour is better, because the scores after the last auction are determined by the number you have in each colour. One card of a particular colour yields 1 VP, two cards yields 3 VPs, three gives 6 VPs etc. Nige suffered from bidding a large amount on the first 3 card auction and then not having enough cash to bid for future items, a position compounded by the fact that people refused to bid or allow an auction to end on his numbers. John, on the other hand, got a foothold in two colours and then a dream auction came up with 3 cards in just those colours. We made the critical mistake of not stopping him at all costs from winning that auction, and it was plain sailing from there. However, everyone enjoyed the game and it played very quickly.
