This week, we welcomed Andrew Hannay to his first session of the Shrewsbury Boardgames Club and, hopefully, he enjoyed it enough that he will join us again. Andrew joined Pete, Mark W and myself to play Thebes, one of the first games to use a time mechanic to determine player order. Early on, I went for a couple of Congress cards but Andrew was wise to the fact that if I was alone in taking these, I could rake in the points. The others were merrily excavating in year one while I spent most of it in Europe and only did two excavations right at the end of the year. Pete managed to put on a couple of small exhibitions and Mark W was the only one to complete a large one. However, my early build up of knowledge paid off in the second year as more picks from the bag yielded more artefacts, although I did have one dig of nine picks that revealed only one treasure. In the end, the scores revealed me to be comfortably ahead although it felt much closer than that as we were playing. Good fun. |
