Game played: Wars of the Roses: Lancaster vs York ( Z-Man Games ) BGG Id: 58936

This week we were meeting at Mark K's house and welcomed Carl to his first Shrewsbury Boardgames Club session. As there were seven of us, we split into two groups and four of us sat down to play Wars of the Roses, a game I was keen to try and is recognisable by the huge player screens that come with the game. First year, I got picked on by Mark K and lost my Bishop of Durham, which severely hampered my income, especially as I had been last in turn order during the set-up and therefore had got poorer income producing cards to start with. As a result, I was always playing catch-up. Mark K, being the only one of us to have played before, took advantage and took a healthy early lead. However, Carl had a really good penultimate turn and managed to catch and overtake him. However, this left him very spread out and forced to defend heavily in the final round. As a result, Mark K was able to win back his advantage and take he victory, while I was counting myself lucky just to get as many points as I did but still trailing in last place.

I found Wars of the Roses to be quite good fun but focussed too much on second-guessing what other players were going to do. Hence, the game was a bit too chaotic. That said, I'd definitely play again.
