Game played: Caylus ( Rio Grande Games ) BGG Id: 18602

Five of us this week so we decided to have a go at Caylus, a game we've not played for a while, particularly since we'd felt Caylus: Magna Carta was a marked improvement. I started out pretty well by building the castle early on and used my royal favours to assist my building construction. However, I got completely shafted (pardon my French) on one turn when I tried to be a bit too greedy, and there was no way back. Mark G concentrated entirely on castle building and got pretty close to winning. Mark K was able to stockpile a load of gold for game-end scoring and also came pretty close. However, Nige and Guy shared the plaudits after Guy was able to claw back Nige's lead with lots of points (10?)from Royal Favours on the last turn. That said, even though he shared the win, Guy didn't really enjoy it particularly due to some vicious provost manoeuvring (mostly initiated by Mark K - although the rest of us might have joined in a bit!). Overall though, it was a very close game with just five points separating first and last place.
