For our third game, I introduced Nicky and Andrew to Traxx which is a fantastic simultaneous puzzle game by Reinhard Staupe and Steffen Benndorf, the designer of Qwixx. Players each have an identical multi-coloured hex grid with the only variation being the spot from which they must start the game. In each of the fifteen turns, a card is revealed showing four or five coloured hexes. Players are then trying to draw a single continuous path from hex to hex using only the colours on the card. They don't have to use all the hexes on on the card but the fewer moves you make, the more unlinked hex spaces you will have at the end and each of these is worth a negative point. There are also hexes with numbers from 2 to 10 and the first person to connect their path to the number scores this number of positive points. Any player subsequently linking to the number only scores half points. After fifteen turns, add up the positive and negative points and the player with the most wins. In our game, Nicky started off very conservatively and not moving as far as she could have done so she ended up with lots of unlinked hexes. I was struggling to link to the numbered hexes first as just as I was within striking distance, the next card didn't show the colour of the hex I wanted. Andrew struck the right balance and importantly linked to the 10 hex first and he ran out the winner by four points. Great game, particularly if you like games in the mould of Take it Easy.
