The group of five then moved onto a horse racing game, the old Waddingtons game, First Past the Post, also known as Lose Your Shirt. This is a game played over a series of races where you use cards to move horses you have bet on towards the finishing post while also playing cards to hamper others. However, the horse you bet on is chosen secretly before the race and is only revealed should you need to use that horse's movement car to push it towards the line. Reveal your intentions too early and others will conspire to make you lose. Bets can either be to win (paying out 5-1) or to place first or second (paying out 2-1). Losing bets are placed in the centre of the board and, in later races, you can instead place a £50 Jackpot bet to win the money in the middle if your horse wins. Most money after the last race wins.

This turned out to be a contest just between Mark G and me, with Mark G gaining money from a couple of good win bets while I managed to consistently place but for less return. Nicky decided by the fourth race that she wasn't succeeding by thinking about her cardplay so switched to playing randomly - she didn't do any worse, but also didn't do much better, although she did manage a win in the final race to at least end up in profit, something John and Andrew failed to achieve - in John's case unsurprisingly as his poker face kept giving away which horse he had backed. Mark G failed to win the Jackpot on the final race, which would have made the scores close, but I made money on every race and ended up with a comfortable victory.
