Game played: Roll for the Galaxy ( Rio Grande Games ) BGG Id: 132531

With no session last week, nine eager gamers turned up at my house to play. I had managed to get an early copy of Roll for the Galaxy and so was very keen to try this. Mark K, Mark G, Guy and Steve joined me. This was very, very good and retained quite a bit of the feel of Race for the Galaxy but seemed much less confusing due to icons and text being on the tiles. The ability to manipulate the dice was clever so you always had something useful you could do with whatever you rolled. However, you still had a bit of a gambling aspect in trying to leach off phases you thought somebody else might choose. Also, the starting worlds and factions point each player towards certain strategies and, in our game, Guy was able to make very good use of a produce/ship combination and this enabled him to pick up 21 VP chips. Mark G went for worlds and developments, while I was forced early game to go the same route due to me starting with two grey worlds (so no produce/ship option for me). Mark G eventually built his twelfth tile to end the game and we were unsurprised to find Guy had won, although Mark K wasn't so far behind once he started shipping for points. Steve's engine never seemed to get going. Really enjoyable game that will play quicker with more familiarity of the tiles and dice options.
