There were eight of us this week and we split into groups of five and three. On my table, we started with Tiny Epic Kingdoms, which has been getting some really strong buzz as being a 30 minute 4X game. It certainly has that feel as you are developing your kingdom, expanding out into new areas, generating resources to allow you to expand your population and improve your technology (magic), attacking or creating alliances with other players, and building up your tower to generate victory points. And each player leads a different faction with varying special abilities which mean that everyone's strategy is likely to be subtly different. With thirteen different factions in the box, this means, there should be lots of variability from game to game. However, it did feel a little too short to me (surprising, I know, given my preference for shorter games) and our game probably was a bit too peaceful as there were only two or three wars throughout the game. Guy went all out for building his tower. He didn't really develop his magic as he was the shapeshifters and their speciality, to take on another random faction's ability, meant he never knew what advantage the magic was likely to offer him. The rest of us did progress our magic quite a bit, while I was trying to expand my population at every opportunity. Guy ended the game by reaching the top of his tower and, while I was able to match his VP score, tower points broke the tie in his favour, with Nicky coming in third just a point behind. I enjoyed this quite a bit and am interested in seeing what the other factions do.
