There were ten of us this week and I'd previously arranged with Mark K and Steve to try out the new motor racing game, Race! Formula 90. Nige and Guy joined us. This is a nice meaty, strategic game and, even though I took a bit of flak for opting to play the basic game, I think everyone realised that there was plenty to think about even without the additional rules.

Nige started off in pole position and claimed he couldn't lose it with a car that allowed him seven cards in hand. However, his low capacity for taking damage gave him plenty of tense moments. I decided to late-brake on the first corner to try and get past a couple of robots and, in what turned out to be a recurring theme for me in this game, luck just wasn't with me and I ran off the track. Nige was racing off into the distance and looked like he might be able to pit and still come out in the lead but Guy was able to keep up just enough to stop that. After I ran off the track a second time, it looked like I was in danger of being lapped by Nige but, by this time, his car was in bad shape and he was struggling to hold it together. This allowed Guy to catch and overtake him going into the final lap. However, a contest for the lead in the final corner saw Guy make the fatal error of letting Nige win the contest and, although Nige's speed wasn't great coming out of the turn, Guy just couldn't muster enough power to overtake him (whereas if he'd gone all out to win the corner, he would have been able to hold Nige off). As it was, Nige roared over the line in first place, closely followed by Guy. Steve took the third podium position while Mark K and I did at least manage to come in ahead of all the robots. Great game.
