It was Julia, Steve and me on the other table and I was keen to try Machi Koro, a Japanese game that has been getting some rave reviews since it appeared in short supply at Essen. I can see why as it is a very accessible tableau building and resource management game which I likened to a cross between Dominion and Settlers of Catan. Steve is not a Catan fan and was bemoaning his poor die-rolling at the start of the game as Julia and I raced ahead. However, the thing with dice is that often they normalise over time and Steve eventually managed to get his engine going whereas mine stalled in the second half. Steve eventually won but, if he hadn't built his final landmark when he did, Julia would have won on her next turn. Steve liked it more than Catan but still didn't like it for the dice aspect whereas I thought it was great and I'm looking forward to mixing things up with the Machi Koro Plus cards.
