Date: 17th February 2012
Game played: Aquileia ( Zoch Verlag ) BGG Id: 108161

With eight of us this week, we split into two tables, with Nige itching to teach Pret-a-Porter. Unfortunately, the rules were so full of holes that they weren't sure they were playing the right game so decided after 3 hours, when they were barely three-quarters of the way through, to abandon the game without a result.

Meanwhile, I taught my group Aquileia, a worker placement game that worked very smoothly but the multiple ways of scoring victory points meant that none of us really knew what was going to be a good strategy. Guy concentrated on building workshops and banks and activating them each turn (except one where Andrew managed to block him from a crucial harbour space). However, that meant he was neglecting villas so he got no big points in the final scoring. Andrew and I, on the other hand, were building villas and also collecting the laurel cards that act as multipliers. Andrew completely filled the yellow district and with a three yellow laurel cards got a massive 72 point kicker at the end of the game. However, I had collected resources for the final turn to build a nice 10 point villa in the blue region to go with my 18 points in the cream district. With three cream laurels and 2 blue ones this gave me enough to catapult me to the win.

This was a very good game which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Guy was a bit unfortunate to pick a strategy that didn't quite work for him but we'll all know better next time. Definitely one to play again.
